Heart-y Eats for Athletes: The Power of Omega-3s in Wild Fish

Updated: Oct 1, 2023

As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I know that professional athletes need to fuel their bodies with the best nutrients possible to perform at their peak. And when it comes to heart health, there's one nutrient that stands out above the rest: omega-3 fatty acids. These little powerhouses can be found in wild fish, such as salmon, sablefish, tuna, and sardines, and they pack a punch when it comes to keeping your heart in tip-top shape.

But why are omega-3s so important for athletes? For starters, they help to reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation can lead to a host of problems, including heart disease and increasing risk for injury, so keeping it in check is crucial for athletes who put their bodies through the ringer on a regular basis.

Omega-3s help to lower blood pressure and triglycerides, both of which are major risk factors for heart disease. But to hit even closer to home for an athlete, they've also been shown to improve the function of the blood vessels, which can improve blood flow to the muscles and organs.

But wait, there's more! Omega-3s have also been linked to improved brain function, which can give you an edge on the field or court. They can also improve your mood and reduce your risk of depression and anxiety.

So, how can you make sure you're getting enough of these heart-healthy omega-3s? The best way is to eat wild fish at least twice a week. Not only will you be getting a healthy dose of omega-3s, but you'll also be getting high-quality protein and other essential nutrients.

The best way to get wild fish is to catch it yourself or find a trusted fishmonger in your town. If you don’t have someone local, I challenge you to try a “direct from the ocean” option: online wild seafood from Premier Catch. It's wild seafood from Alaska that has been portioned, flash frozen right after catch, had the bones removed, and shipped directly to your door. Take the guesswork out of seafood shopping. And remember, a healthy heart is a strong heart, and a strong heart means better performance on the field or court!

Enjoy the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for your heart health and athletic performance. Trust me, you'll feel the difference!
